How to download and install Grok Bot, step by step

In short

Step-by-step instructions to download and install the real Grok Bot app on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android, plus how to sign in and spot fakes.

Searches for "Grok Bot download," "Grok Bot for Mac," "Grok Bot for Windows" and "Grok Bot for Android" are everywhere right now. Here's how to get the real app onto your computer or phone, one step at a time. These are the same steps I use in Chapter 3 of my book.

First: get the real thing

When something gets popular, copycats show up. The official places to get Grok Bot are:

  • x.ai/bot for the desktop app. Type it into your browser yourself rather than clicking a link in an email or an ad.
  • cursor.com/download/bot, a second official download page.
  • The App Store on iPhone and iPad, where the developer is listed as X Corp.
  • Google Play on Android. The surest way to find the right listing is to follow the link from the official website.

What you need

  • A computer (Mac, Windows or Linux), or a phone or tablet.
  • An internet connection.
  • A plan that includes Grok Bot, or the free trial. See my pricing guide.

Phones have published minimums: iPhone needs iOS 18 or later, iPad needs iPadOS 18 or later, and Android needs version 9 or later.

Installing Grok Bot on a Mac

  1. Open your web browser and type x.ai/bot into the address bar.
  2. Choose the download. You'll be asked to pick between "Apple silicon" and "Intel." These are two kinds of chips that Macs use.
  3. Not sure which you have? Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner and choose "About This Mac." If you see a line called "Chip," choose Apple silicon. If you see "Processor," choose Intel.
  4. Open the file you downloaded. It's usually in your Downloads folder.
  5. A window opens showing the Grok Bot icon. Drag that icon into the Applications folder.
  6. Open Grok Bot from your Applications folder. If your Mac asks whether you're sure, choose "Open."

Installing Grok Bot on Windows

  1. Open your web browser and type x.ai/bot into the address bar.
  2. Choose the download. You'll be asked to pick between "x64" and "Arm64." These describe the kind of processor your computer has.
  3. Not sure? Open the Start menu, then Settings, then System, then About. Look at the line called "System type." It will mention x64 or ARM.
  4. Open the file you downloaded and follow the installer's steps.
  5. When it's done, open Grok Bot from the Start menu.

Installing on Linux

On x.ai/bot, look under "More downloads." There are versions for the common kinds of Linux.

Installing on iPhone, iPad or Android

  1. Open the App Store on an iPhone or iPad, or Google Play on Android.
  2. Search for "Grok Bot."
  3. Before you install, check the developer name under the app's name. On the App Store it should say X Corp.
  4. Tap "Get" or "Install." The app itself is free to download.
  5. Open the app when it's finished.

Not sure what version your phone has? On an iPhone, open Settings, then General, then About. On most Android phones, open Settings, then About phone. Menu names vary between phone makers.

Signing in for the first time

Grok Bot uses an account from Cursor, the company that runs the computers your Bots work on. If you don't have one, you'll create it as part of signing in.

  1. Open Grok Bot. On a computer, choose "Sign in." On a phone, choose "Log In or Sign Up."
  2. A web browser window opens. Sign in there, or create your account if you're new.
  3. When the browser says you're signed in, go back to the Grok Bot app.
  4. If your access comes from a SuperGrok subscription, the app asks you to link it. On a phone, choose "Link Grok Account," finish in the browser, then "Finished Linking? Refresh My Status."

If you bought The X Subscription, sign in with the same account you used to subscribe. That's how the app knows your plan includes it.

Notice you typed your password into a browser window, not into a chat. Keep that habit. It's the most important safety rule in the whole book.

What happens next

The first time you sign in, Grok Bot gives you a short tour. It introduces Bots, the shared computer and routines. Then it asks which tools you use, like email or a calendar. Answering doesn't connect anything. It just helps the app suggest a first Bot.

While you're doing the tour, your Bots' computer gets set up in the background. Leave the app open until the "Starting your computer" message goes away.

At the end you'll see "Meet a future teammate." Pick a suggested Bot or choose "Create your own." Either is fine. Then head to my guide on how to use Grok Bot for your first safe job.
